Set against the continually growing hair and beauty industry backdrop, The Afro Hair Awards focuses on identifying, nurturing and growing hairdressers from mere talent to entrepreneurs by providing recognition, training, business linkages and mentorship.

The Afro Hair Awards has been present for over 4 years in the beauty and hair space.

The Inspiration

The Afro Hair Awards [TAHA] was started by Muli Musyoka IAT, the first Trichologist in sub-Saharan Africa.

From a garbage collector to a second-hand clothes seller, Muli joined the hair industry as a hairdresser in 2007 and has since risen to become a key opinion leader in the hair industry both locally and internationally.

Through his growth he has seen the levels of professionalism in the hair industry drop significantly, and thus dedicated his time to give back to the industry by creating forums that:

  • Identify and nurture talent.
  • Foster mentorship and business linkages.
  • Inspire growth in the hairdressers professional & personal life.

The need

Lack of exposure: Hairdressing is highly and rightly lauded as an immensely creative industry with thousands of highly skilled and talented stylists who have not had a platform to showcase what they do best.

Lack of training: Most of the people working in the salons luck proper training and the few who are trained do not have opportunities to show case their prowess and inspire the rest.

Closing the gap: Creating a healthy, competitive environment that shall trigger entrepreneurial thoughts and curve a path towards fulfillment, personal and career progression, is the gap we seek to close.
